Strengthening Reading and Writing Skills of Adults Enrolled in French Language Immersion.

Francization courses offered by the Ministère de l’Immigration, de la Francisation et de l’Intégration (MIFI), to adults where French is neither their first or second language, prepare them for the workforce in Quebec. However these courses are not sufficient tools for success in qualified post-secondary studies in French.

This project aims to increase the accessibility of adults in francization to post-secondary studies by developing a new training offer, complementary to the francization program, and flexible according to learners’ needs. This training program will focus on developing specific reading and writing skills which are necessary to succeed in post-secondary studies and not often worked on in existing francization courses.

The strength of this project is based on the pooling of the research expertise of the partner universities in the fields of FSL didactics and literacy, as well as on the practical expertise in francization from the Cégep de Sherbrooke and the Centre de langues at l’Université de Sherbrooke.

During 2020-2021, the first part of the work was accomplished by a notably significant collection of data coming from 44 students who had graduated from francization courses, educators, analysis and census of the results, and analysis of existing didactic material.

Going forward, the content of the training modules will be developed, and the experimentation of a first training offer is planned for 2021-2022.

This project was made possible thanks to $50,000 of PRESE financial support, as part of the 2020 call for research proposals.
